Draught Preparedness

Where is our draught preparedness? The drought currently affecting the United States, Canada, and Mexico. What is our preparedness? It is a severe and prolonged period of dryness that is causing significant water shortages. Other negative impacts on the environment and local communities. This drought is primarily caused by a combination of factors, including climate change, population growth, and overuse of water resources.

Statistics on the impact of the mega drought include:

  • In the United States, over 40 million people are currently affected by the drought, with the worst-affected states being California, Nevada, and Arizona.
  • In Canada, the drought is affecting over 8 million people, with the worst-affected provinces being British Columbia and Alberta.
  • In Mexico, the drought is affecting over 12 million people, with the worst-affected states being Mexico City, Chihuahua, and Durango.

The drought is having a severe impact on agriculture, especially crop yields expected to decrease significantly. It will affect food prices which are expected to rise. Livestock is also being affected by the shortage of water, with many farmers forced to reduce their herds or sell off their animals.

Additionally, the drought is causing significant wildfires. Which are destroying homes, businesses, and natural habitats. The prolonged dryness is also causing lakes, rivers and reservoirs to dry up. Whereby it impacts the availability of drinking water and the habitat of wildlife.

The drought is a serious issue that requires immediate action to address. Governments, organizations, and citizens must work together to conserve water, protect the environment, and implement sustainable water management practices.

Draught – What to prepare?

Here are some steps individuals and communities can take to prepare for the mega drought:

  1. Conserve water: Utilize water efficiently by taking short showers, fixing leaks, and using drought-resistant plants in landscaping.
  2. Develop a water storage plan: Store water in large containers or tanks for emergency use, in case of water shortages.
  3. Create a drought plan: Develop a plan of action for dealing with water shortages, including identifying alternative water sources and rationing water usage.
  4. Support sustainable water management: Support local and national efforts to implement sustainable water management practices, such as rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling.
  5. Educate yourself and others: Learn about the causes and impacts of the drought, and educate others about the importance of water conservation and sustainable water management.
  6. Check for local regulations: Some areas have strict regulations during droughts, such as watering bans and fines for using too much water. Familiarize yourself with the regulations in your area and make sure you’re compliant.
  7. Be prepared for wildfires: If you live in an area prone to wildfires, make sure you have an emergency evacuation plan in place and keep an emergency supply kit ready.
  8. Stay informed: Keep up to date on the latest developments and recommendations regarding the drought, and be prepared to adjust your plans as necessary.

It is important to note that while these steps can help mitigate the effects of the drought. Thus it’s important to also support the long-term solutions such as; supporting the adoption of renewable energy, reduce carbon footprint, adapt to the changing climate and support policies that address the root causes of the drought.
